Scents of Wood
Barrel-aged woody fragrances that explore every facet of woods through IFF collaborations.
Scents of Wood was created by French fragrance industry veteran Fabrice Croisé, who launched the brand around 2020 after earlier founding EB Florals in 2014 and later selling his stake in that company. Having spent years developing perfumes for Lancôme at L’Oréal and then working in perfume strategy and communication, Croisé turned his attention to woods and forests while living in a mountain town in Utah, where he spends free time skiing and hiking. The brand’s concept is articulated through three names: ShinrinYoku, its Japanese name meaning forest bathing; L’Âme du Bois, its French name meaning soul of wood; and Scents of Wood, the English name that represents the finished perfume.
The house is built on a technical idea: organic sugar cane alcohol is aged in pre-used wooden barrels, such as cognac or other spirit casks, before being used in the fragrances. This process, developed in exclusive partnership with IFF perfumers, is intended to infuse the alcohol itself with aspects of real wood, sometimes adding traces reminiscent of maple syrup or whiskey. Every scent in the line maintains a woody backbone while exploring different facets such as ambery, gourmand, fresh, floral, green, and leathery tones. By 2023, the collection had grown to around 30-plus fragrances, all centered on woods rather than a specific place or persona, with the brand described by Croisé as a love letter to forests and to the beauty of trees.
A niche, luxury house known for woody compositions.
The brand started as a direct-to-consumer, digital-first project with a tight selection of woody perfumes centered on the barrel-aging concept. Over time, the range expanded to cover multiple facets of wood, from ambery and gourmand to green, fresh, and leathery interpretations, while maintaining the core idea of a woody backbone. As collections grew, IFF perfumers experimented with more freshness and unexpected pairings, such as vetiver with lilac or hazelnut accents, broadening the brand's stylistic palette without abandoning its forest-driven identity.
Scents of Wood is a strong choice if you are serious about woody fragrances and want something technically and conceptually different from mainstream offerings. If you are not already a fan of woods, the focused aesthetic and pricing may feel like overkill.
