Note Profile
Gaiac Wood
Smoky, tea-like wood
Guaiac wood has a distinctive smoky, tarry wood aroma with subtle sweet and balsamic undertones. It often reveals nuances reminiscent of black tea, leather, and a gentle medicinal facet as it dries down. The scent is persistent and evolves from a fresh, slightly spicy opening to a warm, resinous base.
Guaiac wood is sourced from the heartwood of the Bulnesia sarmientoi tree, native to South America, particularly Paraguay and northern Argentina. The essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of the wood, which is valued for its density and high oil content.
Perfumers primarily use guaiac wood as a base note to impart depth and longevity, especially in woody, smoky, and oriental compositions. It blends well with other woods, resins, spices, and floral notes, often providing a bridge between smoky and sweet elements in a fragrance.
Perfumers known for using Guaiac Wood include Pierre Montale , Roja Dove , Alberto Morillas , Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud , Christian Provenzano , and Luca Maffei .
