Ambronova is a captive ambergris odorant from Symrise, launched in the Iconoclast series at the 2024 World Perfumery Congress. It smells dry, woody and ambery, with a soft musky body and a warm animalic edge. A light peppery accent sits on top. It is potent and long-lasting, and its maker positions it for oud accords.

Scent Profile

Amber_resinous leads and dry_woody sits with it, because the source never separates them. The paper says 'potent dry woody-ambery odors' and calls the family 'dry-woody ambergris notes', so the two facets are one claim and are scored level rather than ranked. Clean_musk for 'musky aspects' and 'musky-soft'. It is the facet the paper uses to tell Ambronova apart from Ambrocenide, so it is a real difference the maker asserts, not an inference. Animalic for 'sensual-animalic', named in the same clause as the musk and clearly the smaller of the pair. Fresh_spice for the 'additional peppery accents', which the paper calls an accent and nothing more. Nothing else is scored. The cedar feedstock is chemistry, not smell, so no creamy_woody is asserted here.

Origin

Symrise makes Ambronova synthetically from alpha-cedrane, a cedarwood-derived feedstock the company calls sustainable. The published route eliminates an alkoxy group with phosphoric acid in pyridine to give a vinyl ether, adds beta-cedren-9alpha-ol under acetic acid, then uses a thermal Claisen rearrangement. The chemistry is unusual for this family because the molecule carries a polar methoxy group in the ketal moiety, and the same synthesis throws off two methoxy ketones that add the musky and peppery character. The paper's own point is that a ketal function is not required for a dry woody ambergris odour.

Usage in Perfumery

Use Ambronova as a base-note amber. Symrise's paper names oud accords as the intended home, and the molecule's dry woody-ambery core with a musky-animalic body suits woody orientals, leather and modern amber compositions. It is potent, so it is a low-dose material. It gives radiance and length rather than a top-note effect.
