About

Chinese magnolia is a creamy white floral with a ripe-fruit edge. Trade sources reach for gardenia and jasmine on the flower side and pear, lychee or banana on the fruit side. It is not the lemony magnolia already published: the sources that compare them say the Western species is the citrus one and this is the creamy-fruity one. Which botanical species the name points at is still open, and that is why confidence is low.

Scent Profile

White_floral leads and all three trade sources agree on it: soft and creamy, reached for through gardenia and jasmine in one account and filed under Floral > White Flowers > Solar in another. Fruity is the second identity and the thing that separates this from the published magnolia. One source names pear and lychee, another names yellow fruits, a third names a banana-ester ripeness. Lactonic carries the creamy and butyric quality that two of the three describe. Tropical covers the solar and banana-ester side, and it is held under lactonic because only one source frames it that way. Floral is the generic petal body under the white-flower top. Sweet_vanillic is the 'slightly sweet undertone' named directly. Under the line, citrus is set low rather than zero: no source names lemon for this note and one says the lemon belongs to the Western species, but nobody asserted its absence, so it is reduced, not removed. Tobacco_hay is the tea-like reading, weakly supported by the trade text and by four of 14 pyramids pairing it with oolong or green tea.

Origin

The name covers at least three white-flowered species. Premiere Peau gives Magnolia denudata or Magnolia x soulangeana, the Yulan magnolia, and states on the same page that no commercial essential oil exists for it and the scent is rebuilt from synthetic floral accords. The material actually traded as 'Magnolia China' is Michelia alba flower oil, a linalool-rich white flower oil from Java, now often reclassified as Magnolia x alba. ScenTree's French text names a third species, Magnolia maudiae, as 'magnolia de Chine', with an absolute rich in methyl benzoate and acetophenone. All three are white florals and the vector is scored to what they share.

Usage in Perfumery

A floral heart material. Attested on 5 Fragrantica entries and 14 Parfumo entries across 11 brands, including Tom Ford Venetian Bergamot, Estee Lauder Beautiful Magnolia Intense, Carner Latin Lover and two Elizabeth Arden Green Tea flankers. In 13 of those 14 pyramids it is a middle note, and in every one of them its neighbours are florals: gardenia, ylang-ylang, tiare, jasmine, osmanthus, lily of the valley, iris. Four of the 14 place it directly beside oolong or green tea.
