Cocktail accord is a fantasy note. It stands for the smell of a mixed drink in general, not for any one recipe. Spirit, a citrus garnish, fruit and a prickle of carbonation, bright at the top and quickly gone.

Cocktail accord stands for the smell of a mixed drink in general, spirit first, with a boozy warmth underneath everything else. A citrus twist of lime or lemon runs across the top, next to a brighter fruity note from the mixer and garnish. A herbal, juniper-like thread and a light sugar sweetness sit in the middle. A tropical note appears in some readings, closer to a pina colada or mai tai, and a sour, tart citrus-juice edge keeps it from turning flat.

There is no cocktail material. No supplier sells a generic cocktail accord. The trade sells one named drink at a time. The Perfumer's Apprentice lists a Gin Key Accord, 'Bright, Clean, Herbal, Juniperberry, Agrestic, Effervescent', and a Pina Colada Key Accord, 'very fresh and fruity/creamy'. Demeter sells a Gin & Tonic, 'strong, sweet with a sweet-deep juniper finish and citrus twist'. Fragrantica files the term itself as 'A fantasy cocktail note'.

Usage in Perfumery

Used at the top of a composition to make it read as a drink rather than as a raw material. The Perfumer's Apprentice says its gin accord is 'designed to accent your top notes' and that the alcohol itself cannot be captured, only implied: 'once added to an alcohol based perfume, it will blossom and lift'. Most briefs name a specific drink and reach for that accord. This note covers the ones that name none.
