Cognac Barrel smells of toasted oak that has held brandy for years, a light rather than heavy wood. The warm, rounded burn of aged grape brandy sits alongside a vanilla and caramel sweetness from the toasting. Dried fruit runs through both, and it reads as more fruity than whisky. A buttery oak lactone gives it a soft creaminess, a pleasantly spicy warmth runs through it, and a faint smoky char sits under a sour, mushroom-like rancio floor.

Origin
A concept note rather than an extracted material. It names the cask, not the drink. Premiere Peau splits the two cleanly and credits the oak with vanillin, eugenol and oak lactone, while the dried fruit and the rancio come out of the spirit itself. Perfumestars makes the same split in different words, naming 'mature oak barrels' and 'oakwood extracts to represent the aging barrels' alongside dried fruits and caramel. No manufacturer datasheet names cognac barrel as a raw material.
Usage in Perfumery
It is used as a boozy woody base. Premiere Peau calls cognac 'a clean boozy-gourmand base note' that works in amber, leather and luxury-gourmand builds. Nejma's Le Parfum d'Alice prints Cognac barrel, and the one reviewer reads it as 'light wood with a pleasantly spicy cognac scent', which is the wood leading and the spirit qualifying it.
