Cosmone
Note Profile
About
Cosmone is a modern macrocyclic musk ingredient created by Givaudan, prized for its rich, warm and powdery musk character. It offers a diffusive white-musk style scent with a soft ambergris-like sweetness and subtle fruity nuances that enhance depth and sensuality in the base of a fragrance. Used at low concentrations, it provides long-lasting musky radiance across many fragrance styles.
Scent Profile
Cosmone smells like an intense, diffusive musk with a creamy, powdery body and a warm, slightly sweet undertone. Descriptions compare it to a white musk with pleasantly sweet, anisic and faintly fruity nuances, coupled with an ambergris-like sweetness reminiscent of older nitro musks but smoother and more modern. Compared with other synthetic musks, it is richer and warmer than clean laundry-type musks, with a soft animalic-sweet edge that gives roundness without harshness.
ScentWheel
Origin
Cosmone is a fully synthetic macrocyclic musk ketone developed by Givaudan; it is not derived from any botanical source. Chemically, it is described as (E)-3-methyl-5-cyclotetradecen-1-one or (5E)-3-methylcyclotetradec-5-en-1-one, a C15 macrocyclic ketone structurally related to muscone and civetone. It is manufactured through multi-step organic synthesis and supplied as a colorless liquid for fine fragrance and personal care applications.
Usage in Perfumery
Perfumers primarily use Cosmone as a base-note musk and fixative, where it provides long-lasting musky warmth and diffusion even at very low dosages around 0.1%. It fits naturally into musky, ambery, woody, oriental, chypre and fougere compositions, and can also enrich floral, fruity, citrus and green accords by adding depth and soft sweetness. Cosmone is often combined with other musk materials to build complex musk accords, lending an ambergris-like, powdery smoothness and improved sillage without the regulatory issues of older nitro musks.
