Steam-distilled needle oil of jack pine. Resinous and dry-woody like the other pines, with a green-herbal and citrus lift that its sellers say the common pine oils do not have.

Scent Profile

Amber_resinous leads, because two of the three sources put resin first. Luminescents call it "fresh highly resinous". BoreA SENS say "woody and resinous smell". Dry_woody sits just under it and is the "deep pine forest scent" that Rising Sun Botanicals opens with. Green and aromatic_herbal are the same phrase read twice, Rising Sun's "notes of green herbs". Green takes the larger share because a needle oil is green before it is herbal. Citrus is the facet that keeps this off the published pine note. Rising Sun state the "sweet citrus fruits" are "not found in other pine oils", and Luminescents independently call the aroma "slightly citrus". It is held and no higher because both sources qualify it. One says "slightly" and the other calls it a note rather than the body. Cooling_mentholic is below the naming bar and is not stated by any source. It is read off the published composition, from camphene at 1-6% and bornyl acetate at 4-10%.

Origin

Jack pine is Pinus banksiana, a small conifer of the Canadian boreal forest and the northern United States. The oil is steam-distilled from the needles and twigs. BoreA SENS sell it as pin gris and publish the composition as alpha-pinene 45-60%, beta-pinene 8-14%, bornyl acetate 4-10%, delta-3-carene 4-10% and camphene 1-6%. They describe the oil itself as pale yellow to greenish.

Usage in Perfumery

A heart note for conifer and forest accords. Luminescents rate its aroma strength as strong, and say so by comparison: stronger than Scotch pine. So it carries further than the pine oil it would replace. Its citrus and green-herb top lets it sit under a citrus opening without a seam, which is the reason to reach for it rather than plain pine.
