Scent Profile

Mineral leads and two of the three sources put it first in the same words. Premiere Peau opens with mineral, metallic, faintly sulfurous, and The Scent Base's whole entry is hot stone and sulfur. Sulphurous is second because both those sources name it in the same breath, but it is held under 0.50 rather than at gunpowder's 0.88 for two reasons stated in the sources: Premiere Peau qualifies it as faintly and says the sulfur fades, and the reconstruction is described as sulfurous traces at micro-levels. Smoky is the drydown, warm, mineral, smoky depth, plus the warm smoky base elements in the build. Earthy is the only facet Demeter gives, and Demeter is the one source describing a finished commercial fragrance rather than an accord, so warm and earthy is evidence about what buyers actually smell and cannot be discarded because it disagrees with the glossary. Amber_resinous is the warm in warm smoky base elements and in Demeter's warm and earthy, the resinous weight that stops the accord being only cold stone. Aquatic_ozonic is the ionised-air quality, named directly as a material choice, and it is the facet that most separates this from coal. Below, warm_spice follows The Scent Base placing lava under warm spicy accords, and dry_woody follows the same sentence naming woody. Metallic has no facet of its own in the 32 and is carried inside mineral, which is why mineral sits as high as it does.

Origin

A fantasy note. Nothing is extracted from lava and there is nothing to extract: fresh flows run at 700 to 1200C and destroy volatile organic compounds, so the smell people remember from a volcano is the gas released around the flow, mainly SO2, H2S and HCl, not the molten rock. Perfumers build it from mineral-metallic accords, sulfurous traces at micro-levels, ozonic materials for the ionised-air quality, and warm smoky base elements.
