About

Obsidial is Pierre Guillaume Paris's own accord, not a Givaudan or Firmenich captive despite the registered-trademark name. The house describes it in three words: mineral, aqueous floral, spicy. The image it gives is exact and useful, the smell of Volvic volcanic stone heated by the sun just after a rain shower. That is a petrichor picture with a flower in it.

Scent Profile

Obsidial smells like sun-warmed volcanic stone just after a rain shower, mineral first and stony rather than soft. An aqueous, rain-wet quality runs through it, with an unnamed flower folded into the wet stone rather than sitting apart from it. A spicy edge sits alongside, without any one spice named. Underneath is the scent of warm earth after rain, close to petrichor but drier, more stone than soil.

Origin

An in-house accord built by Pierre Guillaume Paris from what the house calls a synergy of four molecules. The four are not named. There is no CAS number and no public patent, because it is a blend rather than a single synthesised material. No independent trade press entry exists for it and no chemical database holds it. Everything below comes from the maker's own page.

Usage in Perfumery

Sold as a floral volumising agent, which is a claim about performance as much as smell. The house says the four molecules act on the head and heart for volume and on the base for persistence, and credits it with the strength of Costume Liquide, Tigre d'Eau and Metarosme 13.2. It is used to push a floral heart outwards rather than to smell of itself.
