About

Peanut butter is roasted peanut plus fat and sugar. The nut character is the same pyrazine-driven roast as plain peanut. On top of it sit a creamy, custard-like sweetness and an oily richness that plain peanut does not have.

Scent Profile

Peanut Butter smells nutty first, the same roasted character as plain peanut. A creamy, custard-like sweetness sits over it, richer and more rounded than the bare nut. An oily, fatty richness and a caramel warmth run through it, closer to butter than to raw sugar. A faint chocolate-like note and a slightly earthy, husk-like edge sit underneath.

Origin

Ground roasted Arachis hypogaea, usually with added oil, salt and sugar. There is no peanut butter extract. A peanut oil CO2 extract exists for flavour and fragrance use, and its odour includes roasted peanut, peanut butter and caramel. A peanut butter note is usually built as an accord. Pyrazines give the roasted nut. Cyclotene, furaneol and vanillin give a brown, caramel sweetness. Acetoin and acetyl propionyl give a buttery, custard-like note. 2,4-Decadienal and fatty esters such as ethyl oleate give the oil.

Usage in Perfumery

A gourmand and novelty note. Parfumo listed 20 perfumes with it on 2026-10-10, released from 2006 to 2025, and Fragrantica files it under sweets and gourmand smells. Several pair it with jam or chocolate, as in Demeter's PB & J and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. It tends to run through the whole perfume rather than sit at the top.
