About

Physcool is MANE's patented cooling molecule, menthyl lactate (CAS 61597-98-6, C13H24O3). It is sold for what it does rather than what it smells of. It activates TRPM8 cold receptors on skin and mucous membrane and produces a deep, late-arriving chill without any mint smell, mint taste or bitterness. Both sources found call it nearly odourless, and one adds that at high dose a very faint, clean, almost mineral trace can be picked up.

Scent Profile

Cooling_mentholic is the only facet above 0.25, and it is high only because the perceived effect is cold. There is no mint smell behind it. MANE's own copy sells the molecule as 'cooling without causing a menthol taste' and Premiere Peau states the point plainly: 'Physcool isolates the thermal signal -- creating cold without flavor.' Everything else is near zero because the sources say so, not because they were silent. Mineral sits as the single trace odour anyone reports: 'at high concentrations, a very faint, clean, almost mineral note can be detected, but this is marginal'. Aquatic_ozonic and clean_musk carry the clean, empty quality of that trace and nothing more.

Origin

Fully synthetic. It is menthol esterified with lactic acid, so it carries menthol's carbon skeleton without menthol's free hydroxyl and without its volatility. MANE patented it over 20 years ago and now sells a range of Physcool mixes, including a natural-status version, for flavour, oral care, beverage and cosmetic use.

Usage in Perfumery

Used as a cooling modifier rather than an odorant. In fine fragrance and skincare it adds a physiological cold effect that supports an olfactory freshness built by other materials. In flavour work it gives long-lasting cooling in confectionery, drinks and oral care where a mint character would be wrong.
