About
Pinot Noir grapes smell of red berries first, raspberry and cherry, with an earthy undercurrent and a violet-and-rose floral layer that a generic grape note does not carry. This is the fruit, not the wine. There is no alcohol in it and no oak.
Scent Profile
Fruity dominates and all three sources lead with it. Premiere Peau opens with an immediate burst of juicy red berries including raspberry and cherry. Grands Bourgognes lists cherry, sour cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry and redcurrant. The Wine Cellar Insider gives cherries, strawberries and raspberries. Earthy is second and is the facet that separates this from a generic grape: Premiere Peau calls it hints of earthiness that carries the vineyard's terroir, Grands Bourgognes gives forest floor, humus, mushroom and truffle with age, and The Wine Cellar Insider simply says earth. Floral is third and is attested by two sources as violet and rose, with Grands Bourgognes adding peony and faded rose. Sour carries the acidity: Premiere Peau names a balance between sweetness and acidity, and Grands Bourgognes names sour cherry and redcurrant. Warm_spice is the sweet spice, liquorice and subtle pepper that Grands Bourgognes reports and the warm undertones of spice and wood that Premiere Peau puts in the drydown. Origin
Vitis vinifera, Pinot Noir cultivar. An old Burgundian variety, thin-skinned and less hardy than Cabernet Sauvignon. It is grown across Burgundy, Alsace, Champagne, Oregon, California, New Zealand and Germany. Terroir shifts the aroma: Burgundy fruit reads mineral and tense, Alsace fruit bright and juicy, warm-climate fruit fuller and blacker.
Usage in Perfumery
A heart note. Premiere Peau places it as a rich, fruity character that blends with floral and woody elements, pairing with blackberry and plum among fruits, jasmine and peony among flowers, and oak and spice in the base. Grape notes in fine fragrance are synthetic reconstructions, not distilled extracts, so this is a composed impression rather than a natural material.
