Taiwanese Incense Cedar
Note Profile
About
Sweet incense smoke over dry wood
Scent Profile
Taiwanese incense cedar smells of dry, light wood wrapped in a sweet, balsamic warmth. Soft incense smoke rises through it, like temple sawdust smouldering. It is sweeter than common cedar and has none of the sharp pencil-shaving edge. A faint hint of amber and a trace of warm spice show in the long dry-down.

Origin
Taiwanese incense cedar is the heartwood oil of Calocedrus formosana, a tree that grows only in Taiwan. The oil is steam-distilled from the wood and is pale yellow. One published analysis gives alpha-terpineol, terpinen-4-ol, shonanic acid and thymol as its main parts. It is not the Californian incense cedar, Calocedrus decurrens, and not a true Cedrus cedar.
Usage in Perfumery
Perfumers use it as a base wood where they want sweetness and incense smoke rather than pencil-shaving cedar. It sits between cedar, sandalwood and incense in woody and resinous accords. Its dry-down is long, and a supplier compares its wear with agarwood.
