Trat oud is the sweet, fruity end of the oud range: dry wood carrying overripe fruit, with the barnyard funk of Indian oud reduced to a soft leather undertone. It is the oud the trade sells as approachable.

Scent Profile

Trat Oud smells of dry wood carrying overripe fruit, the sweet, fruity end of the oud range. Fig, plum marmalade, pomegranate syrup and dried apricot run through it, with a warm, slightly sweet base underneath. The barnyard funk that Indian oud carries is reduced here to a soft leather undertone rather than aggressive animal funk. A deep, honeyed sweetness runs through the fruit, syrupy rather than sharp.

Origin

Oud oil distilled from Aquilaria crassna grown in Trat province, on Thailand's eastern border with Cambodia. Thailand banned the export of wild A. crassna in 1992 after overharvesting nearly took the species out, so almost all Thai oud now comes from plantation trees inoculated with fungus on purpose. The three retailers who sell it do not agree on what a Trat bottle contains. Oud & Musk describes a soft, elegant wood 'without animalic or smoky overtones'. Agaroots sells a 'Trat Classic' with 'hints of smokiness'. Sabily sells a 'Trat Sweet' loaded with fig, plum marmalade and pomegranate syrup. That spread is grading and batch variation inside one regional label, which is normal for oud.

Usage in Perfumery

A base note used where oud is wanted without the funk. It bridges Middle Eastern oud, where a strong animalic profile is prized, and Western taste for smoother, fruitier woods.
