About

Distilled agarwood oil from Aquilaria trees grown in Vietnam. It is sweet, fruity and resinous, with a camphoraceous, medicinal edge. It is less animalic than Hindi oud. Some sellers call it sweeter than Cambodian oud, and others call it deeper and more incense-like.

Scent Profile

Vietnamese oud smells of dry agarwood with a sweet, fruity lift. Fermented tropical fruit, dried apricot and honey come through at the start. A camphoraceous, medicinal sharpness runs alongside, with a bitter, incense-like edge. Underneath, a restrained animal warmth reads as soft leather rather than barnyard. The dry-down is warm, woody and resinous, and it lasts. It carries a cool, mentholic edge, like icy mint, beside the camphor.

Origin

Resinous heartwood of Aquilaria species, mainly A. crassna, from central and southern Vietnam. The wood is infected, then steam- or hydro-distilled. Khanh Hoa province, around Nha Trang, is the best-known region. Wild harvest is now banned, so most oil comes from plantation trees.
