Untethered opens with a sharp, peppery blast of cardamom and saffron that arrives fast and loud, more assertive than Tom Ford's softly warmed original. The leather accord at the heart is the closest match to Ombre Leather - smooth rather than harsh, with a light dusting of jasmine sambac that keeps it from turning too austere. Where the comparison falls away is texture: the original's leather feels rounded and cushioned by a whisper of vanilla, while Untethered reads flatter and more one-dimensional, the leather note sitting closer to the surface of the skin rather than blooming outward. The base of amber, oakmoss and patchouli arrives quickly and settles into a fairly linear dry-down, missing some of the original's slow-building depth. Longevity is the clearest gap - expect three to four hours of real projection before it fades to a skin scent, against the original's six-plus hours of steady wear. Still, for a fraction of the price, Untethered captures the rugged-refined leather identity that made Ombre Leather a modern icon, and it is a reasonable entry point for anyone curious about the style before committing to the real thing.
