492 is built around the same sandalwood-leather-cardamom core that made Le Labo's Santal 33 a modern cult classic. The papyrus and cedar in the base do a reasonable job of echoing the original's dry, smoky woodiness, and the violet-iris heart adds a similar powdery softness. What's missing is the synthetic sandalwood-ambroxan trick that gives Santal 33 its uniquely creamy, almost leathery-skin quality and enormous projection - 492 reads as a solid, competent woody-leather scent rather than that specific, much-imitated texture. Longevity and sillage are noticeably more modest, settling into a soft skin scent within a couple of hours rather than the original's famous room-filling trail.
