498 Tuscan Leather

498 opens with the same unusual raspberry-saffron-thyme combination that gives Tom Ford's Tuscan Leather its instantly recognisable, slightly rebellious character. The fruit-spice contrast is a reasonably close match in the first hour. Where it falls short is the leather itself - Tuscan Leather is famous for a raw, almost rugged suede-and-hide accord that reads as genuinely intense and a little dangerous, while 498's leather note is softer and rounder, closer to a polished woody-leather than raw hide. The olibanum-jasmine heart adds a touch of the original's resinous depth but doesn't fully replicate its smoky complexity. A solid, wearable leather fragrance, just less confrontational than the scent it's inspired by.
