Oud Or is Houbigant's entry in the rose-and-oud tradition, and it approaches it from the French side rather than the Gulf side. The opening is fruitier than the name suggests: raspberry gives a bright, slightly jammy sparkle alongside rose and orange blossom, which softens the first impression and signals early that this is not going to be a barnyard oud. The heart is where it gains authority. Saffron brings its characteristic dry, leathery-metallic edge, labdanum adds a sticky resinous sweetness, and patchouli and geranium provide the earthy, green-mineral spine that keeps the composition from tipping into dessert territory. The base delivers on the promise, with guaiac wood contributing a smoky, almost tarry warmth, oud sitting smooth and resinous rather than sharp or animalic, cedarwood giving dryness and vanilla rounding the edges. Performance is strong, as it should be at this concentration and price: eight hours or more is realistic, with confident projection in the first couple of hours before it settles into a rich skin scent. This is autumn and winter territory, and it belongs to evenings, formal occasions and cold weather rather than the office. If you find most oud fragrances either too medicinal or too sweet, Oud Or sits in the well-judged middle of that lane.
