East London indie house that makes perfume with a resident artist: SOUND from a sound artist, TIME from a performance artist

Indie Official Website Also known as: Aequill

About aequill

aequill is an independent perfume house in East London, where every product is made, poured and prepared. It was founded in 2017 by the Thai-British perfumer Jintana Khieochaum, who began with hand-poured candles. The first range, Mum's Aromatherapy Shop, came from time spent helping her mother blend essential oils for a beauty therapy shop, and the name comes from the word equilibrium.

Perfume arrived through an artist-in-residence programme in the studio, which brings together artists working in sound, sculpture and fine art. Ecka Mordecai, a sound artist, held the first residency in 2021 and 2022 and composed SOUND, three eau de parfum drawn from East London's soundscapes: spring rain, birdsong and laughter, and the idea of a strong, silent type. The sculptor Kate Adelskaya made the bottle caps. The performance artist Mengting Zhuo followed with TIME in 2023 and 2024. Past, Now and Future are built on the Daoist idea of time as a continuous flow, and each bottle comes with a short original score written by the artist.

The scents are unisex and led by an idea rather than a single house style. SOUND runs from green juniper and grass over vetiver, to mimosa and honey among white flowers, to bergamot and neroli over myrrh and woods. TIME moves from a smoky, earthy Past to a green, iris-led Now and a floral, musky Future with pink pepper and tonka.

aequill sits in independent British perfumery, at the art-led, premium end. It suits wearers who want a perfume with a story behind it, and the perfumes are sold through the house's own website.

Brand Evolution

The house began in 2017 as a candle maker, with Mum's Aromatherapy Shop as its first range. The artist-in-residence programme brought perfume. Ecka Mordecai's SOUND range came first, from the 2021 to 2022 residency, and Mengting Zhuo's TIME range followed from the 2023 to 2024 residency. Kate Adelskaya is the resident for 2024 and 2025.

Quick Verdict

A small East London house with a clear method: hand the brief to an artist and let the idea set the scent. SOUND suits those who like green and floral freshness, and TIME those who want a quieter, smokier or musky character.
