Future Society
Biotech-driven niche perfumes built around DNA reconstructions of extinct flowers.
Future Society is a US-based niche fragrance brand created by biotechnology company Arcaea as its first consumer-facing venture. The brand launched in 2023 with the Scent Surrection collection, a line of fine fragrances built around the scientific reconstruction of extinct flowers using DNA sequencing and fermentation technology.[1][3] Arcaea describes Future Society as its “biology first” brand, positioning it at the intersection of synthetic biology and perfumery.[3]
To create the scents, synthetic biologists worked with archival plant material from the Harvard University Herbaria. In 2017, researchers extracted samples from extinct flowers, sequenced their DNA, identified genes that may encode fragrance-producing enzymes, and expressed those genes in yeast to produce novel aromatic molecules.[3][4] These biotech-derived materials were then given to established perfumers such as Jérôme Epinette, Olivia Jan, and Daniela Andrier to compose wearable perfumes.[1][4]
The debut lineup comprises six main fragrances, each tied to a documented extinct plant and its disappearance. Grassland Opera is linked to Orbexilum stipulatum from the North American plains, Floating Forest to Shorea cuspidata from Borneo, and Haunted Rose to Macrostylis villosa subspecies from South Africa, among others.[4][5] Each scent blends familiar perfumery notes with the new biotech components, marketed in both discovery-size vials and 50 ml bottles at prices that place the brand firmly in the premium niche segment.[9][10]
Future Society distributes through its own e-commerce site and selected retailers such as Nordstrom, as well as specialty stockists that highlight its science-driven storytelling.[8][6] The brand has quickly become a talking point among fragrance enthusiasts for its attempt to merge cutting-edge biology with emotional, narrative-led perfumery, offering concept-driven scents that are consciously presented as artistic interpretations rather than literal recreations of lost flowers.[4][5]
A niche, premium house known for floral compositions.
Future Society launched tightly focused on extinct flower DNA as its core premise, using a single Scent Surrection collection to introduce the idea of biotech-informed perfumery. Over time, the brand is likely to expand either by exploring additional lost species or by broadening into other biology-first narratives while keeping the same science-forward framing. Its early move into department store distribution suggests a strategy of staying niche in concept but relatively mainstream in presentation and pricing.
Future Society is an idea-first niche line: the science and extinction stories are the hook, with the scents themselves skewing modern, polished, and relatively safe. It will appeal most to fragrance fans who value concept and biotech novelty as much as raw olfactory impact.
