About

Araucaria is a soft, sweet wood note with a rose-like side. The oil sold under this name comes from Neocallitropsis pancheri, a New Caledonian tree, not from a true Araucaria. Arctander calls it delicately woody, rich and sweet, almost floral. Aftelier calls it a creamy tea-rose. Oshadhi calls it sweet and balsamic with a slight note of cinnamon. It is not a pine note. Perfume note lists also use the name for two true Araucaria trees that have no odour record, so the confidence is low.

Scent Profile

Araucaria smells of soft, sweet wood with a creamy, rose-like side. A gentle balsamic warmth sits under it, with a slight note of cinnamon. It is closer to a soft wood such as cabreuva than to pine. It has little of the sharp, resinous lift of conifer needles.

Origin

The only perfumery oil sold as araucaria is distilled in New Caledonia from the wood of Neocallitropsis pancheri, also called candlewood. The tree belongs to the cypress family and is not a true Araucaria. The oil is viscous and sets waxy at room temperature. Fragrantica gives its Araucaria note as Araucaria araucana, the Chilean monkey puzzle tree. L'Occitane au Bresil's Araucaria line uses a seed extract of Araucaria angustifolia, the Parana pine, as a skin-care ingredient, not as a scent. No odour description was found for either true Araucaria.

Usage in Perfumery

Used as a soft woody fixative. Aftelier calls it a middle note that extends a heart chord, softens sharper notes and blends with florals without adding a strong character of its own. It is also used as a fixative in soaps and cosmetics. Parfumo lists 30 perfumes with the note on 2026-10-10, from brands including Fueguia 1833, L'Occitane au Bresil and Slumberhouse. Some of these mean the monkey puzzle or the Parana pine, not this oil.
