Cream soda is a fantasy gourmand accord named after the vanilla soft drink, not after dairy cream. Both trade formulations found build it on vanilla with caramelised sugar over it. It is sweeter and flatter than cola, with none of cola's citrus or spice, and it has no milky, buttery character despite the name.

Scent Profile

Cream soda leads on a sweet vanillic accord, soft and syrupy rather than bean-like. A honeyed, caramelised-sugar layer sits with it and carries most of the depth. Above that, one of the two published formulations adds a fruity top of raspberry, nectarine and pineapple, which lifts the sweetness without changing its direction. The drydown is clean and lightly musky, with a hint of white floral and only a trace of milky softness. There is no dairy in it.

Origin

There is no cream soda material. It is assembled, and the two suppliers who publish a breakdown do not agree on how. Indigo Fragrance builds sugar on top, caramel in the heart and vanilla cream at the base. Voyageur Soap and Candle puts raspberry, nectarine and pineapple on top and white lily, sweet pea and muguet in the heart over vanilla and musk. Vanilla at the base is the only thing both agree on. In practice the accord runs on vanillin and ethyl maltol.

Usage in Perfumery

A gourmand accent. It gives a soft-drink, nostalgic sweetness that reads as fizzy dessert rather than as bakery. Perfumers use it to round fruit tops and to soften musk bases, and it appears in the sweeter end of modern gourmand and youth-market compositions. It has no lift of its own, so it needs a top note above it.
