About

Mezcal is a smoky, boozy agave note based on the Mexican spirit. It joins roasted agave, campfire smoke, a dry citrus edge and a green, herbal side. It gives a rugged, artisanal character to woody and boozy perfumes.

Scent Profile

Mezcal smells of charred agave and dry smoke, with a medicinal, faintly tarry edge. Lime peel and a green, herbal note lift the top. Under the smoke there is warm earth, a little caramel and the sting of spirit. The drydown is smoky and woody.

What is ScentArt?

Origin

Mezcal is a spirit distilled from the cooked hearts of agave. The hearts are roasted in earth pits lined with hot stones. The heat breaks down lignin into smoky phenols such as guaiacol and cresols. No mezcal extract is used in perfumery. Perfumers build the note as an accord of smoky, woody, citrus, green and boozy materials.

Usage in Perfumery

Perfumers use mezcal in boozy and smoky perfumes, mostly niche ones. The note runs through the whole perfume, from a citrus-boozy opening to a smoky, woody drydown. It pairs with agave, lime, salt, chilli, cacao, incense and woods.
