Natural peony flowers are difficult to extract, so what perfumers call pink peony is almost always a constructed accord rather than a direct essential oil or absolute.[3] This accord is typically built from materials that mimic peony’s rosy, green-floral and gently fruity aspects, such as certain ionones, rose and muguet-type molecules, and light musks, sometimes colored with berry or citrus notes to evoke a “pink” impression. The naming reflects the appearance and character of pink peony cultivars rather than a different botanical species or extraction process.[3][6]

Usage in Perfumery

Perfumers use pink peony primarily as a heart-note floral to create light, contemporary bouquets in feminine or unisex fragrances, often in soft floral, floral-fruity, and fresh floral families.[2][6] It blends well with rose, jasmine, lily of the valley, and linden blossom, and is frequently paired with citrus top notes and soft musks or blonde woods in the base to maintain a sheer, radiant profile.[2][9] Because of its cleanliness and low heaviness, it is popular in daywear and spring-summer compositions where a gentle but distinct floral signature is desired.
