About

Verdox is IFF's ortho-tert-butylcyclohexyl acetate, CAS 88-41-5, launched in 1991. It smells of apple over cedar. The trade is clear that the apple is not literal: it is a fruity-green top sitting on a woody core, with a dry violet-ionone powder behind it.

Scent Profile

Verdox smells of apple over cedar, though the apple is not literal: a fruity, green top over a woody core. The wood is a co-equal part of the material, marked woody-cedar with a pine-like edge. A citrus trace of bergamot and lime shows up in some readings. A dry, violet floral powder sits behind it all.

The note IS the molecule. Its own origin states CAS 88-41-5, and this dataset holds exactly one material on that CAS. Identity checked as (CAS, name), not CAS alone: '2-tert-butylcyclohexyl acetate'.

How the layers join

Origin

Verdox is a synthetic ester. It is the ortho isomer of tert-butylcyclohexyl acetate, and IFF put it on the market in 1991. The isomer matters. The cis and trans ratio shifts the balance between the fruity-citrus and the woody-camphoraceous side, and that is documented in general supplier literature. No source ties a specific ratio to the commercial Verdox odour, so it is not asserted here. Two trade pages describe the material and neither is IFF. Scentspiracy gives fresh apple, fruity-green, woody and violet-like, with dry powdery ionone and cashmeran-amber nuances. World of Aromas gives apple and woody undertones, and adds a citrus top of bergamot and lime that Scentspiracy does not mention. IFF's own 1991 launch material was not located.

Usage in Perfumery

2 Fragrantica placements, none on Parfumo. Fragrantica files it as a synthetic raw material used to deliver an apple note and adds that it develops an intense woody facet. It goes into woody, coniferous, fruity-apple and fruity-tea accords. Perfumers use it where a natural apple would fall off too fast. It gives the fruit a cedar floor to stand on and holds the shape into the heart. It also works as a bridge between a fruity top and a woody base, which is why it turns up in transparent tea accords.
