Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab Snake Oil is a perfume oil, created by Elizabeth Moriarty Barrial. Snake Oil opens with Spicy Notes and Vanilla, settles into a heart of Patchouli and Incense, and dries down to a base of Vanilla Absolute, Musk, and Earthy. Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab's Snake Oil carries an Acquired verdict, a sweet-led wear.

BPAL's first and signature perfume oil: dark, sugared vanilla with patchouli, earthy musks and spice. Warm, resinous and long-lasting, loved by wearers who like it aged. Fresh bottles can read as sweet or powdery.

Top, heart and base are the pyramid as published, not a timing claim. Each note's timing follows its listed tier, where it usually sits across many published pyramids (from ScentPrism) and its vapour pressure. A note comes through as the notes usually listed before it fade, judged from how other pyramids order the same pair. The thickness of a ribbon shows the note's share of what is left on the skin, which tracks how strongly it smells, because odour thresholds rise with vapour pressure. The shares come from how prominent wearers vote each note. It is a simple model, not a measurement.

When To Wear

Best Seasons

Best For:
Autumn Winter

Autumn and winter. Dark vanilla, patchouli and spice are warm and heavy, and the powdery sweetness clings in cold air. Spring works with a light hand, but summer heat pushes it sweet and thick.

Best Occasions

Best For:
Date
Also Works:
Casual

Wearers call it sexy, dark and seductive, so date and evening wear fit best. It is too sweet and potent for most offices, and too heavy for sport, though a small dab works for casual cold days.

About

Snake Oil is the scent that started Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab. The house calls it its first perfume and its signature, and it is the classic BPAL blend. The current formula is described as vintage patchouli and dark, aged vanilla absolute, with deep earthy notes, vegetal musks, sugared vanilla bean and dark spices. On the skin it opens sweet and spiced, a rich vanilla that can feel almost foody for the first few minutes. Give it time and the picture darkens. The patchouli and earthy musk come forward, with incense and a dry, powdery floral at the very end. Think molasses, resin, dark vanilla incense and velvet. The powdery drydown recalls classic amber orientals, and it sits closer to Arabian-style oils than to a western perfume. Age matters. Fresh oil is lighter and can lean coconutty, buttery or baby-powder sweet. Aged oil, kept cool and dark, deepens into a darker, spicier resin. The house says its oils are handmade in batches and keep for years if stored well. It is sold as a 5 ml perfume oil with a 1/32 oz sample vial, and it is also made as hair gloss, lotion and bath oil. It belongs firmly in autumn and winter, at night, with moderate sillage and long wear. Try the sample first if you dislike sweet vanilla.
