Acqua Tempesta No 3

Acqua Tempesta No 3 is Lengling's storm at sea. The Italian name translates as stormy water and the brief is taken literally. The LING half of the composition supplies transparent aquatic notes, peppermint and elemi, all of it cold, mineral and briny rather than the sweet, calone-heavy blue that the aquatic label usually implies. Hedione keeps that side airy and faintly jasmine-tinged. Running against it, the LENG half is smoke. Cuvee fumee, a smoked wine accord, gives the perfume a sooty and slightly boozy edge, and olibanum layers resinous incense over the top. Haitian vetiver and cedarwood anchor the base, dry and rooty, and it is that woody-smoky spine which stops the watery half evaporating inside the hour. The contrast is the entire point, and it is an unusual one: most aquatics stay clean, most smoky perfumes stay warm, and this refuses both. At extrait strength expect six to eight hours, with arm's-length projection through the first couple of hours before it settles close to the skin. It suits transitional weather better than high summer and reads best outdoors, on a coastal walk or a cool bright day. Casual and smart-casual settings are its natural home. Quiet enough for an office, though the smoke divides opinion at close range, and it lacks the sweetness most people reach for on a date.
