About

Fresh, citrusy resin

Scent Profile

Elemi has a fresh, lemony-resinous scent with bright citrus facets and a peppery, slightly balsamic undertone. Its aroma is lively and sparkling at first, gradually revealing a soft, woody warmth as it dries down. The note is often described as bridging the gap between frankincense and citrus oils.

Origin

Elemi is a natural gum resin obtained from trees of the Canarium genus, primarily sourced in the Philippines. The resin is collected by making incisions in the tree bark, and the essential oil is extracted through steam distillation.

Usage in Perfumery

Perfumers use elemi mainly in top and heart notes to impart freshness and complexity to citrus, woody, and incense accords. It blends well with frankincense, myrrh, citrus oils, and spices, and is valued for its ability to lift and brighten resinous compositions.

Notable Perfumers

Perfumers known for using Elemi include François Demachy , Lorenzo Pazzaglia , Cécile Zarokian , Dominique Ropion , Luca Maffei , and Cécile Matton .
