French Puzzle opens on a green, aromatic laurel-and-neroli pairing that nods to the herbaceous start of Guerlain Bois Mysterieux. The heart turns dark and woodsy - earthy patchouli and dry atlas cedar with a thread of jasmine - capturing the austere, disciplined character that makes the 2019 original a mature, polarising wear. As it dries down, leathery myrrh takes over, lending the balsamic, faintly smoky sweetness that gives the Guerlain its radiant finish. As a budget dupe, French Puzzle reads simpler and more linear: the cumin-tinged, animalic complexity of the original is smoothed out, and the leather pushes a little louder and cheaper than the refined Guerlain accord. Still, the overall arc - green-woody opening into a smoky leather-myrrh base - holds the recognisable shape. Performance is respectable for the price, settling into a close, evening-appropriate sillage. A dark, mysterious woody-leather for cold-weather nights and wearers who like their fragrance serious rather than crowd-pleasing.
