Origin

Myrrh is a natural gum-resin obtained from the Commiphora species, primarily harvested in East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. The resin is collected by making incisions in the tree's bark, allowing the sap to harden before being gathered and processed for perfumery.

Usage in Perfumery

Perfumers use myrrh mainly as a base note to impart depth and longevity to compositions, especially in oriental, woody, and incense-themed fragrances. It blends well with frankincense, spices, woods, and florals, and is valued for its fixative properties and ability to add complexity.

Notable Perfumers

Perfumers known for using Myrrh include Christopher Sheldrake , Bertrand Duchaufour , Antoine Maisondieu , Christian Carbonnel , Karine Dubreuil-Sereni , and Karine Vinchon-Spehner .
