Spirit opens with a bright, spicy citrus: mandarin and bergamot lifted by aromatic cardamom and a liquorice touch of anise, brisk and a little brash, just like Hugo Boss Soul. The heart turns spicy-warm and aromatic, cinnamon and nutmeg kept in check by a cooling sweep of lavender, the signature balance that gives the original its dark, masculine character. The drydown softens into something powdery and comforting - sweet tonka bean, warm amber, clean musk and a thread of earthy vetiver, with vanilla rounding the edges. As a dupe it follows Soul's spicy-citrus-to-warm-powdery arc faithfully; where it diverges is in smoothness, with the spices reading a touch sharper up top and the base slightly simpler than the designer version, while longevity stays modest - much like the original EDT, which itself leans toward a softer wear. Projection is moderate, settling into a soft, spicy-powdery skin scent.
