Carven

French couture-rooted designer brand known for green, fresh florals and classic vetiver masculines.

About Carven

Carven was founded in Paris in 1945 by couturier Marie-Louise Carven, born Carmen de Tommaso, who built a fashion house specifically with petite women in mind. Working near the Champs Elysées, she developed haute couture with a ready-to-wear spirit, making her clothes and accessories more accessible than those of many contemporaries. Fragrance quickly became central to the brand’s identity.

In 1946 Carven released its first perfume, Ma Griffe, a green floral scent whose green-and-white striped packaging set the house’s visual codes and linked perfume tightly to its fashion image. Green went on to become the emblematic color of Carven, and perfume an essential pillar of the label. In 1957, Madame Carven introduced Vetiver, described by the brand as the first vetiver fragrance in perfumery history, dedicated to her husband and marking the company’s entry into masculine scent.

After periods of lower visibility, Carven’s fragrance profile was revived in 2013 with Carven Le Parfum, composed by Francis Kurkdjian, which brought the name back into contemporary distribution. Today Carven Parfums operates under Groupe Bogart, with fragrances imagined, created and manufactured in France. The range spans feminine and masculine lines that draw on fresh, classic constructions with a couture touch, continuing the link between the house’s fashion heritage and its perfumes.

Brand Evolution

Carven began with couture-rooted perfumes that mirrored post-war French elegance, epitomized by Ma Griffe. The 1957 launch of Vetiver shifted part of the focus to refined masculine perfumery and helped cement vetiver as a mainstream note. After quieter decades and changing license holders, the fragrance line was refreshed in the 2010s, notably with Carven Le Parfum, leaning into airy, modern florals while keeping a recognizable green-fresh thread. Under Groupe Bogart, the brand has focused on maintaining French production and a compact, coherent catalog rather than chasing every fleeting trend.

Quick Verdict

Carven is a solid heritage designer house for those who like green florals and clean vetiver without paying luxury prices. It is more about quiet, classic polish than making a loud statement.
