January Scent Project

January Scent Project is an American indie perfume line created by artist and perfumer John Biebel, who began the project in 2015 after years of work in painting, music, UX design, and fragrance writing. The brand operates from Rhode Island, with Biebel working in a dedicated manufacturing and studio space in the greater Providence area that was expanded for perfume production around 2018.

The brand launched with Smolderose and gradually grew into a collection that includes compositions such as Smolderose, Vaporocindro, Eiderantler, Selperniku, Burvuvu and additional limited editions, many of which are documented on the official site and archival pages. Biebel’s own writing frames January Scent Project as an ongoing artistic exploration, treating perfume as a medium alongside painting, photography, and music, and building the line through study, experimentation and collaboration rooted in a strong respect for craft.

Critics and reviewers frequently note the line’s unconventional structures and unusual accords, such as the milk, salt, tobacco and butter facets in Selperniku, which illustrate the brand’s interest in pushing familiar notes into stranger, more textural territory while remaining wearable. The project has drawn attention from niche fragrance writers and was discussed in "Perfumes: The Guide 2018", helping to position January Scent Project within the contemporary American indie scene focused on artistic, small batch composition.
