Kinski
Single-scent German niche project built around a bold marine, green and animalic homage to Klaus Kinski.
Kinski is a German niche fragrance project created by perfumer Geza Schoen in 2011 in collaboration with Kinski Productions, the estate associated with actor Klaus Kinski. The fragrance was released to coincide with the 20th anniversary of Klaus Kinski’s death in 1991 and is explicitly conceived as an olfactory homage to his volatile persona and documented love of the sea.
The brand’s output is deliberately minimal: it is represented by a single namesake composition, Kinski, positioned as a woody fougere with pronounced marine and animalic facets. Schoen’s formula layers cassis, juniper, pink pepper, and castoreum in the opening over a heart of sea water, cannabis, plum, orchid, magnolia, orange blossom, rose, and nutmeg, resting on a dense base of woody notes, vetiver, cedar, patchouli, labdanum, benzoin, musk, moss, ambergris, styrax, ginger, and oakmoss.
Commentators frequently highlight the fragrance’s unconventional structure, where green, salty aquatic tones and marijuana accords meet resinous woods and animalic materials to mirror Kinski’s excessive and often confrontational public image. This singular, concept-driven release defines the brand: Kinski exists primarily as a one-off artistic collaboration built around a specific figure, rather than as a broader commercial line or multi-scent collection.
A niche, premium house known for woody fougere compositions.
Since its launch in 2011, Kinski has remained a single-fragrance venture rather than expanding into a full line, reinforcing its status as a focused artistic project rather than a conventional brand. Over time it has gained a reputation among niche enthusiasts as a cult oddity, noted for its uncompromising mix of marine, cannabis and animalic notes and its tight association with Klaus Kinski’s image.
Kinski is a one-shot, high-impact niche fragrance: original, bold and memorable, but far from universally wearable. It suits collectors who appreciate provocative compositions more than casual users looking for everyday versatility.
