German Perfume Brands
German perfume history gave the trade one of its everyday words: Eau de Cologne, 'water from Cologne', first mixed in the city in 1709. Fragrance has been the fastest-growing part of German beauty care since 2020, by the trade body IKW's count. The German houses below include Hugo Boss, Escentric Molecules, Montblanc and Moth and Rabbit.

The perfume market in Germany
Fragrance now sits just behind decorative cosmetics in size, IKW says, and skin and face care is growing strongly too. Behind them stands an industry of more than 470 beauty and home-care companies, which IKW speaks for, covering nearly all of the market.
Germans are at ease buying beauty online. Nearly half of German prestige beauty is bought on the internet, Circana's Mathilde Lion says, far more than in France and close to Britain.
The industry leans on its home market, where demand has been rising while exports have felt the weight of high energy and labour costs, IKW says.

Questions about perfume from Germany
How big is the fragrance market in Germany?
About €2.1bn a year at retail prices: the trade body IKW projected €2.1bn for 2025, 2.1% up on 2024, after growth of 9.6% a year since 2020. Fragrance has been the fastest-growing part of German beauty care over that time.
Do Germans buy beauty online?
Increasingly. Circana's Mathilde Lion told Premium Beauty News that 46% of German prestige beauty sales were made online in 2025, far ahead of France at 18% and just behind Britain, where more than half of prestige sales are online.
Which houses count as being from Germany?
Those based there, as recorded on each brand page, whatever their tier: designer, niche and independent, Arabian or anything else. A house whose country we have not recorded appears on no country page, and a house is listed once it has at least one published perfume.
