Country of origin: France
French Perfume Brands
French perfume is the largest category in the country's selective beauty market, by Circana's count, and the second-largest in the country's cosmetics exports, the trade body FEBEA says. At home, shoppers keep trading up to stronger concentrations and pricier bottles, and they buy more of their beauty online every year. The French houses below include Parfums de Marly, Dior, Creed and Chanel.

The perfume market in France
Circana's Mathilde Lion describes a market that gains value through premiumisation: higher concentrations and bottles at the top of the price range grow fastest, while body sprays do well at the other end of the shelf. Gifting keeps its own calendar. Valentine's Day and Black Friday hold up better than Christmas, Mother's Day and Father's Day, a pattern Lion calls specific to France.
Where people buy is changing. Most beauty is still bought in shops, but e-commerce has been gaining ground fast, and pharmacies and single-brand chains are growing in importance. France still sells far less online than Britain, Lion says.
Abroad, French perfume keeps winning. Perfume exports have more than doubled in six years, FEBEA says, and perfume is the country's second-largest cosmetics export.
Grasse, in Provence, is still home to the raw materials. Roses, jasmine and bitter orange blossom are grown nearby for distillation into perfume materials, and Britannica notes that perfume dominates the local economy, with multinational groups behind most of it.

Questions about perfume from France
How big is the perfume market in France?
Perfume is the largest category in France's selective beauty channel, Circana says, at €2.3bn of a €4.3bn market in 2025. Its reach abroad is bigger still: the trade body FEBEA puts French perfume exports at €8bn in 2025, more than a third of all French cosmetics exports.
Where do people in France buy perfume?
Mostly in shops, with online growing fast. Circana does not split perfume out, but across selective beauty online has climbed from 8% of sales in 2019 to 18% in 2025, and pharmacies and single-brand chains are gaining ground. France still sells less online than Britain or Germany.
Which houses count as being from France?
Those based there, as recorded on each brand page, whatever their tier: designer, niche and independent, Arabian or anything else. A house whose country we have not recorded appears on no country page, and a house is listed once it has at least one published perfume.
