1667 Smoked Wood is an Eau de Parfum launched in 2021. Smoked Wood opens with Mandarin, settles into a heart of Cypress, Pepper, Nutmeg, and Galbanum, and dries down to a base of Leather, Sandalwood, Frankincense, and Moss. 1667's Smoked Wood carries an Acquired verdict, a smoky-led wear.

The driest and most austere of the six. A herbal cypress and thyme heart over smoked olibanum, leather and moss, with only a flick of mandarin to soften the entrance.

When To Wear

Best Seasons

Best For:
Fall Winter

Smoked olibanum, leather, moss and cypress make a dry resinous composition that cold air sharpens and summer heat turns acrid. The single mandarin note is too brief to lighten it.

Best Occasions

Best For:
Formal
Also Works:
Date Casual

Incense and leather give it a serious, slightly severe presence better suited to evenings and formal wear. Projection is contained enough that a tolerant office would cope.

About

Smoked Wood is the least accommodating fragrance in La Collection Royale and probably the most interesting. Mandarin is the only top note listed, and it behaves accordingly, giving a brief bright flare before stepping aside within minutes. What follows is properly herbal. Cypress supplies a dry, resinous, faintly funereal evergreen, thyme adds a sharp medicinal bite, and galbanum brings the bitter green snap of crushed stems that always reads as slightly cold. Pepper and nutmeg warm it fractionally without turning it sweet, and the overall effect through the middle hours is closer to a windbreak of conifers after rain than to anything conventionally perfumed. The base is the payoff. Smoked olibanum carries a dry, resinous incense smoke that never becomes a bonfire, sandalwood adds a creamy weight underneath, and leather and moss give a faintly damp, earthy, slightly animalic floor. There is almost no sweetness anywhere in the composition, which will divide opinion sharply. Some community discussion draws a line to a well-known modern masculine aromatic, and older batches are reported to have leaned closer to that comparison than recent ones. Performance is solid rather than enormous, with the incense and leather clearly present many hours in. Autumn and winter, evenings, and cold air suit it best.
