Grossmith Golden Chypre is an Eau de Parfum launched in 2012, created by Trevor Nicholl. Golden Chypre opens with Bergamot, Orange, Cardamom, and Nutmeg, settles into a heart of Vetiver, Patchouli, Rose, and Geranium, and dries down to a base of Woody Notes, Musk, Amber, and Labdanum. Grossmith's Golden Chypre carries a Favourite verdict, a woody-led wear.

A bright, spicy-citrus chypre built on geranium, patchouli and vetiver, with a smooth amber and labdanum finish. Light, polished and unisex, it is a gentle way into chypres for anyone who wants retro style without weight.

Top, heart and base are the brand's own listing, not a timing claim - the industry classifies a note by its character as much as by how fast it fades. Each curve here is modelled from that material's own volatility, so groups can overlap when a house lists long-lasting materials in its heart.

When To Wear

Best Seasons

Best For:
Spring Autumn
Also Works:
Summer Winter

Bright bergamot and orange with warm nutmeg and cardamom make spring and autumn equal anchors. The dry amber and labdanum base keeps it wearable in winter, and summer is the weakest of the warm seasons.

Best Occasions

Best For:
Office Date Casual Formal

A polished, moderate scent that suits the office and everyday wear best, with enough depth for an evening out or a dressier event. It is too refined for sport.

About

Golden Chypre is named for autumn light on turning leaves, and the opening fits: bergamot and sweet orange glow first, with nutmeg and cardamom adding a warm, slightly peppery edge. It is bright and sunny, and several wearers find it spicier than the note list suggests. The heart is where the chypre structure is built. Geranium is the clear lead, green, peppery and herbal, with a soft, sheer rose and a little heliotrope beside it. Patchouli and vetiver stand in for the oakmoss that is missing, so the effect is of a mossy chypre without the moss itself. Some chypre lovers miss the real thing, and a few call it a reinterpretation rather than a classic. The base is woods, amber, labdanum and musk, dry and slightly furry, and it fades to a musky, earthy skin scent within a few hours. Reports on staying power are mixed: many wearers get a long day from it, while others find it quiet after the first hour. Projection is moderate, firm at first and then close to the skin. It is light enough for the office and works in spring and autumn, with enough warmth for evening. Several wearers hear the opening as a lighter cousin of Mitsouko, and men and women wear it equally. It is polished and well made rather than dramatic, and at a luxury price it is best tried on skin first.
