Bal d'Afrique is one of Byredo's most-loved releases, a woody-citrus fragrance built around African marigold and violet that opens bright and zesty before settling into a warm, earthy, vetiver-and-cedar base. It has an unusually skin-close, almost intimate quality that rewards close attention rather than loud projection, and it is often praised for smelling different depending on the wearer's skin chemistry. Match Perfumes' No.21 pulls from the same note list - bergamot, lemon, neroli and marigold up top, violet and jasmine at heart, black amber, musk, vetiver and cedar underneath - and the citrus-to-floral transition in the opening hour is a fair echo of the original. The base is where the gap widens: Byredo's vetiver and cedar have a resinous, almost smoky depth that builds slowly and lasts, while No.21's woods read thinner and more generic, collapsing into a simple musk well before the original even reaches its stride. It is a reasonable everyday approximation of the citrus-woody mood but misses the textured, slow-blooming character that has made the original a modern classic.
