Amber Aoud Absolue Precieux takes aim at one of Roja Parfums' most expensive creations, a four-figure interpretation of amber and oud that Roja Dove built by burying a spicy Indian oud deep inside a jammy rose. Pearl Fragrances keeps that basic architecture - bergamot and citrus lead the way, joined quickly by warm saffron and cinnamon that read louder and more immediate here than in the slow-building original. The rose heart is simplified but still recognisably lush, carrying most of the fragrance's identity through the first couple of hours. Where the dupe falls short is in the base: Roja's fragrance uses rare, resinous raw materials - real ambergris, orris root, sandalwood, oakmoss - to build a depth that lingers for a full day. Here, the oud and amber are thinner and more synthetic-smelling, and the whole thing settles into a simpler patchouli-musk within a few hours rather than developing further. It's a recognisable, warm oriental for a fraction of the price, just without the richness that makes the original a genuine luxury.
