AB reaches back to a true classic - Estee Lauder's 1968 Estee, a grande-dame aldehydic floral chypre. The opening fizzes with bright aldehydes over a fruity flicker of raspberry and peach, with ylang-ylang and lemon giving that crisp, soapy, dressed-up first impression. The heart blooms into a classically feminine bouquet of rose, jasmine and lily of the valley, threaded with honey, carnation and a touch of powdery iris. Where the original sinks into a luxuriant oakmoss-and-orris chypre drydown, AB keeps the woody-mossy base lighter and sweeter, losing some of the vintage gravity and crisp moss. Longevity and projection are moderate rather than the all-day staying power of the Lauder.
