Oudlands

Oudlands aims at Amouage's Outlands, a bold incense-and-oud statement from perfumer Cecile Zarokian. It opens with a striking smoky lift of frankincense, elemi, cardamom, lemon and Sichuan pepper, citrus-spiced and resinous. The heart layers patchouli, saffron, cumin, anise and a soft rose-orange-blossom for warmth and complexity, before a dramatic base of oud, more frankincense, amber, labdanum, benzoin, opoponax and musk settles into a long, smoky trail. As a budget interpretation it captures the dark, majestic, resinous mood, but the blend reads flatter and less three-dimensional than Amouage's dense, luxurious construction, and the projection and longevity fall short of the niche benchmark. A characterful, dramatic cold-weather scent for evenings and statement wear at a fraction of the price.
