Courrèges

French Space Age fashion house offering clean, modern fragrances rooted in 1960s Courrèges style.

About Courrèges

Courrèges is a French fashion and fragrance brand created in 1961 by fashion designer André Courrèges, along with Coqueline Courrèges and Marcel Leyrat, in Paris. The house became closely associated with the 1960s Space Age look, particularly through its Moon Girl collection of 1964, known for its use of vinyl, graphic lines, and a strong emphasis on white. Courrèges expanded from fashion into fragrance after signing a distribution agreement with L'Oréal in October 1965.

The first Courrèges perfume, Empreinte, was released in 1971 and has become a reference point in the brand's perfume history. In 1977 the house launched its first men's scent, Amerique. Fragrance activity later shifted ownership: when L'Oréal sold its 50% stake in the fashion business in 1983, it retained full control of Courrèges Parfums, and the fragrance division was later sold on to a Swiss company. Empreinte eventually disappeared from the market before being reintroduced in 2021 as part of a renewed focus on the archive.

From the 2010s onward, Courrèges has rebuilt its perfume line around modern compositions such as La fille de l'air (launched in 2015), an orange blossom-based scent that helped re-establish the brand in contemporary perfumery. The current collection, including ranges like Colorama and minimalist bottles such as C, leans into clean, airy woods, musks, and bright florals that echo the house's streamlined, futuristic aesthetic. Under artistic director Nicolas Di Felice, appointed in 2020, the fragrance portfolio has been refreshed to align with the brand's current fashion identity while maintaining links to its 1960s heritage.

Brand Evolution

Courrèges fragrances began in the early 1970s with Empreinte and Amerique, which reflected the chypre and masculine trends of their time. After a quieter period and changes in ownership, the line was revived with modern compositions like La fille de l'air, reconnecting the brand to younger perfume buyers. The latest launches emphasize genderless, clean, and musky-woody structures, aligning the scent universe tightly with the brand's minimalist, Space Age-influenced fashion direction. Relaunches like Empreinte 2021 bridge heritage inspirations with contemporary formulations.

Quick Verdict

Courrèges is a strong fit if you like clean, modern, design-driven perfumes rather than loud statement beasts. If you want big sillage or dense complexity, other houses will serve you better.
