The Merchant of Venice
Venetian-inspired niche perfumes built around historic trade routes, spices and Murano-glass presentation.
The Merchant of Venice is an Italian niche perfume brand created by the Vidal family and launched around 2013 as part of their company Mavive SpA. The brand is based in Venice and draws directly on the city's historic role as a hub for maritime trade and early European perfumery. According to an interview with Essencional, the Vidal family have been involved in soap and fragrance production for over a century and originally produced soap in the same building that now houses the Palazzo Mocenigo Museum and Study Centre for the History of Textiles, Costume and Perfume.
The brand was conceived as a cultural and luxury project that preserves and develops Venetian perfume heritage. Its concept is built around the historic "Mude" trade routes that once linked Venice with ports from Asia to Africa and Northern Europe, and many fragrances are themed after specific routes, ports, or traded materials. The Merchant of Venice has been appointed as the sole fragrance collection of the Palazzo Mocenigo perfume museum in Venice, reinforcing its institutional link to the city's olfactory history.
Visually, the line is closely associated with Murano glass, using colorful, patterned bottles often finished with tassels and elaborate presentation boxes. Collections such as the Murano Collection highlight ingredients that historically arrived in Venice via long-distance trade, including spices, resins, and precious woods. The brand also operates boutiques in Venice, including locations in historic former pharmacies and on the island of Murano, where visitors can explore the full range and its connection to Venetian glass-making and perfumery culture.
A niche, luxury house known for oriental-amber compositions.
The Merchant of Venice started by tightly focusing on Venice's maritime history, early perfumery and the Mude trade routes, expressed through the original collections and the partnership with Palazzo Mocenigo. Over time, the line has expanded into multiple sub-collections such as the Murano Collection and themed releases tied to venues like the Gran Teatro La Fenice, but it has kept Venice, glass-making and historic materials as its central reference points. More recent launches show a gradual move toward modern niche trends like intense ouds and darker ambers while still framed by Venetian storytelling.
A visually striking, story-rich niche brand that will appeal to those who enjoy resinous, spicy and historically themed compositions. Less suitable if you prefer minimalist, quiet or very fresh perfumery.
