Banana Republic began in 1978 in California, when journalists Mel and Patricia Ziegler opened the Banana Republic Travel & Safari Clothing Company, focusing on reworked surplus and travel gear. In 1983 the brand was acquired by Gap Inc., which shortened the name to Banana Republic and repositioned it as an upscale, globally distributed fashion retailer. The company entered perfumery in 1995, extending its clothing ethos into accessible fragrances distributed through its own stores and third‑party retailers.

Over the years, Banana Republic has released multiple fragrance lines, including early scents like Classic and later themed series such as the Modern Fragrance Collection for men and women introduced in 2014, and the ICON collection developed as a niche‑inspired range that references different decades in the brand's history.
