About Bella Freud

Bella Freud is a British fashion designer and lifestyle label founded by Bella Freud in 1990. It is best known for word jumpers such as Ginsberg Is God and 1970, and over the years it has moved between clothing, interiors, perfume, film and publishing. The label's logo was drawn by her father, the painter Lucian Freud, and her first career steps were taken working for Vivienne Westwood in the 1980s.

Fragrance began in 2012 with a first scented candle, and the Bella Freud Parfum range followed with eau de parfum: Ginsberg Is God, Je t'aime Jane and 1970 in 2014, a self-titled scent in 2015, Close To My Heart in 2016 and Psychoanalysis in 2017. Two take their names from the label's best-known jumpers. The perfumes were made with Azzi Glasser, Christian Provenzano and Beverley Bayne.

The style is warm, resinous and woody rather than clean. 1970 gathers rose, sandalwood, benzoin, saffron, myrrh and incense, Ginsberg Is God mixes elemi, wormwood, tomato leaf, leather and fig, and Je t'aime Jane is a white-floral scent over oud, amber and vanilla. Psychoanalysis sets neroli and petitgrain against tobacco, tobacco flower and leather, over cedarwood, amber and musk.

Bella Freud sits at the premium end of British fashion-house perfume, with a cult following that comes from the clothes. The official shop currently lists only Psychoanalysis, so the earlier scents may be hard to find. It suits fans of the label and wearers who like warm, characterful, non-generic fragrance.
