Laboratorio Olfattivo

Italian artistic perfumery driven by creative director led briefs and independent perfumer collaborations.

About Laboratorio Olfattivo

Laboratorio Olfattivo is an Italian artistic perfumery project created in 2009 by Roberto Drago and Daniela Caon. Multiple Italian sources, including the brand's own "Chi Siamo" page, note that the idea was born from their long-standing passion for profumeria artistica and from their experience as distributors of niche perfume through their company Kaon. Initially launched as an independent brand, Laboratorio Olfattivo later became one of the in-house brands of Kaon S.r.l., which also created the production arm Kaon Lab in 2014 to develop its own and private label lines.

From the start, Drago has acted as creative director, inviting what the brand describes as "the most eclectic noses of the moment" to work with broad artistic freedom. Their portfolio includes collaborations with prominent perfumers such as Jean-Claude Ellena, Lucien Ferrero and Dominique Ropion in the Masters' Collection, as well as Luca Maffei, Cécile Zarokian, Pierre Guillaume and others. The house develops both personal fragrances and home scents, with collections like Laboratorio in Bianco, Laboratorio in Fiore, Laboratorio in Nero, Masters' Collection and Viaggio in Italia by Jean-Claude Ellena cited in Italian press as key to defining the brand's identity.

Laboratorio Olfattivo positions itself explicitly against marketing-led launches. On its official site, the brand states that new perfumes do not arise from market studies but from the need to narrate a memory, journey or sensation. Italian interviews with Caon and Drago emphasize their goal of offering elegance, quality and originality at a coherent price point within the artistic perfumery segment, while using the Kaon distribution and production structure to promote olfactory culture in Italy and abroad.

Brand Evolution

Early releases focused on clearly segmented collections such as Laboratorio in Bianco, in Fiore and in Nero, using simple packaging and emphasizing Italian artistic perfumery. Over time, the brand expanded into more complex narrative projects like Viaggio in Italia by Jean-Claude Ellena and the Masters' Collection, leveraging marquee perfumer names while keeping prices below the ultra luxury tier. The creation of Kaon Lab in 2014 strengthened in house production and helped the line grow internationally while retaining the idea that briefs start from memories or sensations rather than marketing gaps.

Quick Verdict

Laboratorio Olfattivo is a solid choice if you want artist led niche perfumery with reputable noses at relatively sane prices. Not every release is a powerhouse, but the line is thoughtfully curated and rewards exploration.
