Loewe

Spanish leather-rooted designer house with nature-focused, characterful perfumes under LVMH.

About Loewe

Loewe is a Spanish luxury house that originated in Madrid as a collective of leather artisans in 1846. In 1872, German craftsman Enrique Roessberg Loewe joined the workshop and helped consolidate the firm under his name, building a reputation for meticulous leatherwork. The brand later became an official supplier to the Spanish royal household and gradually expanded across Spain before entering the global luxury market.

Loewe entered perfumery in 1972 with its first women’s fragrance, L de Loewe, marking the start of a dedicated fragrance arm that now covers personal scents and home fragrances. Loewe pour Homme followed in 1975, and Aire de Loewe in 1985 became one of the most recognized perfumes in the Spanish market. The catalog has since grown to include lines such as Solo Loewe, Esencia, Agua, and the high-end La Colección and Un Paseo por Madrid collections.

The fragrance division, Loewe Perfumes, sits within the LVMH group, which has owned Loewe since 1996. For more than two decades, in-house perfumer Emilio Valeros shaped key launches including Solo Loewe and Aura Loewe, before creative direction shifted under designer Jonathan Anderson. In 2016 Loewe released 001, the first fragrance created during Anderson’s tenure, and in-house perfumer Nuria Cruelles now steers newer projects such as the Botanical Rainbow and Paula’s Ibiza families.

Recent years have emphasized nature-inspired compositions and color-coded collections, especially the Botanical Rainbow range and Loewe Home Scents, which focus on plant-based themes and garden-like accords. Throughout these changes, the brand has remained closely tied to its Spanish roots and leather heritage, often reflecting those origins through earthy notes, woods, and refined yet direct compositions.

How It Compares

Who It's For

Best For

  • Office wear
  • Warm weather daytime
  • Smart casual events
  • Signature scent use
  • Collectors of designer lines

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Consistent quality across the line for a designer brand
  • Distinct Spanish character and leather influence in several pillars
  • Good balance between wearable and interesting structures
  • Strong storytelling collections like Un Paseo por Madrid and Botanical Rainbow

Weaknesses

  • Distribution can be limited outside Europe and major cities

  • Some releases lean safe for mainstream appeal
  • Naming and line structure can be confusing for newcomers (multiple Agua, Aire, and Solo flankers)

Brand Evolution

Loewe’s early perfumes focused on clear, elegant florals and aromatics, anchored by leather and woods in line with its heritage as a leather house. From the 1980s through the early 2000s, it built a solid masculine and unisex base with Aire, Esencia, and Solo, favoring refined but accessible structures. Under Jonathan Anderson and perfumers like Nuria Cruelles, the brand has shifted toward highly curated collections framed by color, botany, and specific locations, placing greater emphasis on natural-smelling accords and concept-driven ranges such as Botanical Rainbow, Un Paseo por Madrid, and Paula’s Ibiza.

Quick Verdict

Loewe is one of the more interesting designer houses for people who want characterful, wearable scents without going full niche. If you like airy woods, herbal nuances and a clear Spanish accent, it is well worth exploring beyond the mainstream counters.
